Can Strength Training Improve Cycling Performance After 60?

Many adults assume the best way to improve at cycling is simply to ride more.

Jim discovered something different.

At age 65, while preparing for Ironman Tri-Cities, he set a challenging goal: ride 56 miles at 20 miles per hour. For many active adults, that would be considered ambitious. For Jim, it became the motivation to take a different approach to training.

Although he had completed the Inland Empire Ride several times before, this year was different because he added personal training sessions at Results Based Coaching in Richland, WA.

One of Jim's biggest realizations was that he had never truly complemented his riding with an offseason strength program.

Through targeted coaching, he focused on developing a stronger core, stronger legs, and improved upper-body strength. These improvements weren't designed simply to make him stronger in the gym. They were designed to improve performance on the bike and support long-term mobility and resilience.

The result?

A significant personal record on the 75-mile Inland Empire Ride.

When Jim faced the challenging four-mile climb up Webber Canyon, he was able to attack the hill without sacrificing power for the remainder of the ride.

As Jim explained, "The strength was there."

This is one of the most overlooked aspects of healthy aging. Strength training supports more than muscle. It helps maintain mobility, endurance, balance, and independence. Whether your goal is cycling, hiking, golf, pickleball, or simply staying active, building strength creates the foundation that allows you to keep doing what you love.

At Results Based Coaching, we help adults throughout Richland and the Tri-Cities use personal training to improve performance, support longevity, and keep their world BIG.
